Nanhong Agate is a red, microcrystalline quartz variety (SiO₂) with a waxy, opaque appearance. It is distinguished from ordinary red agate by its dense, even red color and strong “gum-like” translucency. Its red color comes from finely dispersed hematite inclusions. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, a specific gravity of about 2.55–2.91, and a refractive index of 1.535–1.539 .

Nanhong agate, anciently called “red jade,” is a variety found only in China and has been used for thousands of years. The earliest known artifact is a Nanhong shell-shaped currency from the ancient Jinsha Kingdom, roughly 3,000 years ago. It later became a substitute for red coral in Tibetan Buddhism, where it was known as the “red pearl” , one of the Seven Buddhist Treasures. In the Qing Dynasty, it was used for court beads indicating official rank. The traditional sources were largely exhausted by the Qianlong period, and it faded from public view until a new source was discovered in Liangshan, Sichuan, in 2009 .
