Red Jasper is an opaque, microcrystalline variety of quartz (chalcedony family), with the chemical composition SiO₂. Its brick-red to brownish-red color comes from finely dispersed iron oxide (hematite) inclusions. It has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, a specific gravity of 2.58–2.91, a vitreous to dull/waxy luster, and no cleavage (conchoidal fracture) .

Red jasper has been gathered or mined since Paleolithic times . In ancient Egypt, it was carved into amulets and cylinder seals, and was especially associated with the “Knot of Isis” protective amulet . In Greek and Roman traditions, it was used for seals and signet rings, and Pliny recorded the belief that red jasper could render athletes invincible . Across cultures, this deep red stone has long been regarded as a symbol of warmth, courage, protection, and endurance.
